Why Stigma Surrounds Sales Positions

Sales shouldn’t be the dirty word it’s gradually transformed into.

Most people outside of the business community have solidified their opinions on salespeople — and many of them don’t hold positive perceptions. Years of overexposure to car salespeople, telemarketers and sleazy infomercial snake oil peddlers has jaded the public. Having this battered image of the average salesperson makes it hard for companies to fill sales positions. Entrepreneur Vanessa Merit Nornberg recently found out the hard way about this. Of the 80-plus people that viewed her Monster.com posting for an open sales position with her company, just 10 applied. 

Yet the truth — and people within the business community understand this — is that sales is an indispensable component of business. Of course, not everybody is selling the same thing. Salespeople also have the ability to make a considerable income given the pay structures of some positions. Given today’s unemployment rate, the plight of companies looking to fill sales positions seems to have tinges of irony attached to it.
