Exinda Networks Helps Universities Comply to Prevent Illegal Downloads

Boston, MA – A recent update to the Higher Education Act of 1965 requires universities to have a plan to combat the illegal downloading of music, videos and other copyrighted works on college campus networks. The new law calls for universities to consider the use of technology-based deterrents such as bandwidth shaping and traffic monitoring technology to prevent illegal peer-to-peer file sharing. Exinda Networks has helped a wide variety of educational institutions worldwide to implement bandwidth shaping and traffic monitoring solutions since 2002.

The U.S. Department of Education (DOE) will be writing the rules to implement this legislation. The DOE will host several regional meetings over the next few months to gather input on the rule making. In the interim, universities are required to make a good faith effort to comply with the new law.

“While illegal downloads of music and videos on college campuses has been an issue for quite some time, the new law brings this issue to the forefront,” said Con Nikolouzakis, Exinda’s chief executive officer. “Exinda’s core strengths in network monitoring, bandwidth management and traffic shaping have enabled us to help a wide variety of educational institutions long before this law. Not only can our solutions prevent illegal peer-to-peer file sharing, they improve the performance of Internet traffic and save universities money by making the most efficient use of the schools’ bandwidth links.”

Exinda Networks offers free, no risk trials of its bandwidth management and traffic shaping appliances. Exinda also hosts free Webinars for universities’ IT professionals to become familiar with bandwidth shaping and traffic management solutions.
