Exinda Slashes Bandwidth Consumption at Georgia Southern University

Exinda, a global provider of WAN optimization solutions incorporating Unified Performance Management, today announced that Georgia Southern University (GSU) has deployed an Exinda WAN optimization appliance to dramatically improve the application experience of its user community across GSU’s large campus network.

This in turn has reduced overall network bandwidth consumption by 22%.

“With the Exinda 8060 solution in place, we can guarantee performance 24/7 by prioritizing critical applications such as streaming educational course materials, while limiting the bandwidth available to recreational applications such as BitTorrent,” said Krey Tinker, network administrator for Georgia Southern University.

“Our previous solution for this had proven unable to provide enough granularity and control, and compared to Exinda was just too complex to manage.”

GSU’s motivation for addressing its network issues with Exinda was a desire to ensure students and faculty alike consistently received a world-class user experience. Exinda appliances prioritize key university applications such as video sharing and cloud-based collaboration, and dynamically ensure that each student gets a fair share of available network bandwidth. Exinda’s Edge Cache further accelerates web and video access by serving content locally and reducing the load on the Internet link.

Unlike conventional approaches to WAN optimization which focus primarily on mass data compression, Exinda’s performance assurance technology when applied to education introduces user and application profiling for precision control and delivery of the student user experience. Exinda’s assurance architecture was designed with the education market in mind as it is the only WAN Optimization solution that targets 52 unique user and application attributes to optimize traffic to assure the network meets its service level agreements.

“Familiar problems like balancing the network bandwidth demands of critical applications against more spurious sources of traffic, are amplified within universities where today’s students and research professionals expect optimum user experience whatever they are doing,” commented Kevin Suitor, VP, Customer Advocacy at Exinda.

“The GSU deployment is a great example of how Exinda can be harnessed to shape and prioritize traffic by application or by user. The added Edge Cache capability ensures big traffic loads such as YouTube and Windows update traffic still flow efficiently but without being allowed to commandeer network resources.”
