OpenView Helps Place 50 Professionals at Expansion Stage Technology Companies in 2011

OpenView Venture Partners, a Boston-based venture capital firm, is changing the way that expansion stage companies source top candidates for key positions.

The firm provides a valuable recruiting service for the companies it backs at a critical stage in their growth — an uncommon approach among leading VCs.

“Recruitment is a significant pain point for many expansion-stage companies,” says OpenView Managing Director Brian Zimmerman.

“If you scale too quickly, you’re in trouble. If you’re not able to scale quickly enough, you’re also in trouble. Our goal is to offer the kind of collaborative partnership that helps these companies hire the right people at the right time, without having to deal with the impediments that most businesses struggle with.”

Through OpenView Labs, the firm’s in-house team of consultants, OpenView Venture Partners offers much-needed recruiting support to its portfolio companies. The firm’s vested interest in seeing its portfolio companies succeed means that it invests the time necessary to fully understand their specific cultures and hiring needs.

This underlying commitment allows OpenView to take a deeper, more hands-on approach to finding candidates than a typical external agency would. The service reduces the burden, risk, and costs associated with recruiting top talent that most expansion stage companies bear alone.

Scott Samios, VP of Sales at Monetate, a marketing optimization technology company, benefited from OpenView’s recruiting expertise first hand.

“It was an eye-opening experience for me,” commented Samios. “OpenView was able to listen to my target, build lists according to that, and then deliver people who were qualified personally and professionally.”

In 2011, OpenView recruited 50 sales, lead qualification, user experience, and marketing professionals on behalf of its portfolio companies, sometimes filling roles in as little as 30 days by conducting active searches.

“Anyone can put a job posting on a website and wait for a hoard of inbound candidates to come through. But you have to actively search if you want to uncover really talented people. I think that’s one of the reasons why we’re able excel in a relatively short window,” said Jessica Ray, an OpenView Labs Recruiting Analyst.

Since 2011, OpenView has doubled its recruiting team to offer even more support to its portfolio companies.
