eEye Releases the First and Only Free Vulnerability Management Solution, Retina CS Community

eEye Digital Security, the company that provides Security in Context, today announced the general availability of its free Retina CS Community product.

The first and only IT security product to integrate vulnerability management along with patching for both Microsoft and common third-party applications from a single console at no cost to organizations.

With this release, eEye dramatically decreases the cost of managing IT security risks, especially for mid-size organizations that are often resource strapped and dealing with budgetary restrictions. Retina CS Community uniquely provides centralized vulnerability management, built-in patching, and vulnerability scanning for BlackBerry mobile devices and virtualized applications at no cost, delivering benefits which include:

  • Reduced security risks with the most cost-effective vulnerability management product available for up to 128 assets.
  • More effective and efficient remediation efforts with automated patching for both Microsoft and third-party applications including Mozilla Firefox and Adobe’s Distiller, Elements, Reader, Flash and Shockwave.
  • Increased visibility and automated vulnerability assessment for BlackBerry mobile devices and virtualized applications.

A key capability of Retina CS Community is the ability to identify and patch vulnerabilities in third-party applications, such as Adobe and Firefox, which are quickly becoming a favored attack vector for hackers. Retina CS Community addresses the growing security risks associated with these third-party applications by extending Microsoft Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) beyond Microsoft application patching to also provide patching for third-party applications. With Retina CS Community, organizations get increased value around existing WSUS installations with a single, integrated solution for both Windows and third-party application patching.

“Retina CS Community expands eEye’s growing list of free security resources to help organizations understand where their weak points are and close security and compliance gaps,” said Brad Hibbert, Vice President of Strategy, eEye Digital Security. “We are very excited to provide this security industry first to help organizations of all sizes reduce security risks and make vulnerability management more efficient and effective, especially around third-party application patching, mobile devices and virtual application scanning.”

Retina CS Community is immediately available for free download athttp://www.eeye.com/CSCommunity.

Exinda Sees Record Results during Q3 2011

Exinda, a leading global provider of WAN optimization and application performance management solutions, today announced it achieved record sales growth and product development milestones during Q3 2011.

Fuelled by the expansion of its sales and support capabilities in EMEA markets, the company achieved revenue growth of over 49% for the three months ended September 30, 2011, compared with the same period in 2010. This follows two quarters of Y/Y revenue growth exceeding 130%. The company also reported sequential quarterly revenue growth of 8% compared with Q2 2011. Exinda also announced that it has increased its global customer footprint by over 25% to more than 2,500 customers, with significant new account wins coming from each of its key geographic regions.

Exinda’s Unified Performance Management (UPM), unique in its integration of visibility, control and optimization, is aggressively winning over customers. Unlike solutions that blindly accelerate any traffic offered to it, the dynamic feedback between components allows UPM to selectively accelerate only business critical applications, not wasting precious optimization resources on recreational or other non-business traffic. UPM’s deep visibility also plays an increasingly important part in real business application identification, while legacy WAN optimization technologies are mired in working only with ports and protocols. As businesses demand more focus on end user experience in increasingly complex application delivery architectures, UPM’s ability to see, protect and enhance at the user level is becoming the clear choice.

“Changes in the way businesses manage their applications are demanding a change in what is needed for effective WAN Optimization,” said Michael Sharma, CEO of Exinda. “Exinda’s next-generation approach to managing applications on the WAN is filling a gap as enterprises increasingly need to extract every measure of performance from their WAN Optimization systems. The legacy systems that made sense a few years ago simply cannot keep up with today’s demands. Businesses that require visibility at the user level and the flexibility dynamically apply and adjust both control and optimization are upgrading to Exinda.”

Exinda’s customer growth includes both organizations that selected its solutions for green field deployments, as well as companies that installed Exinda to replace existing competitive appliances that did not deliver all the required elements of a next generation WAN Optimization solution.

“Exinda’s growth has outpaced many in our industry, and we continue to attract new customers and expand our market reach with our Unified Performance Management approach to managing and optimizing WAN traffic. A significant portion of our new customers has come through displacement of competitors’ products in customer networks. As a ‘pure-play’ WAN Optimization technology provider, Exinda has been able to establish an innovative first-to-market advantage with a fully integrated solution that delivers visibility, control and acceleration – the three pillars of a true next generation WAN Optimization solution,” continued Sharma.

Among the new customers that selected Exinda in Q3 2011 were higher education facilities including University of Colorado and Thomas M. Cooley Law School and government/enterprise organizations such as The State of South Dakota and Raytheon. Telecom Malaysia, Rajamangala University of Technology Isan, Genting Casinos, and Inteva were among the existing customers that placed follow-on orders for Exinda’s WAN Optimization solutions.

Exinda's Virtual Appliance Combines Unified Performance Management and Hardware-Based WAN Optimization Solutions

Exinda, a global provider of WAN optimization solutions has just launched a new virtual appliance that integrates unified performance management functionality with its hardware-based WAN optimization solutions in a virtualized software load.

The unified performance management solution enables enterprises and service providers to utilize the virtual appliance to deliver WAN optimization services to users and customers, without the requirement for a dedicated hardware appliance.

The unified performance management solution powered by Exinda is built on three pillars that include visibility, control and optimization.

By operating at Layer 7 of the network, the solution provides insight into all network activity, usage and performance and CIOs can get all the user and application information they need to keep their networks operating at peak performance. The unified performance management product also provides managers with in-depth reports on network traffic, which empowers them to rapidly take action to improve network performance, user experience and optimize productivity.

The control pillar enables CIOs to optimize network resources to the individual needs of their organizations through comprehensive control over network traffic, without placing heavy-handed restrictions on users.  In addition, the optimization pillar of the WAN optimization solution provides detailed application classification and prioritization, granular policy-based traffic control, and selective TCP and application acceleration. This allows businesses to dramatically improve application response times, increase traffic throughput, and reduce the effects of latency.

“Virtualization and cloud computing are the two biggest trends in computing today, and our new virtual appliance plays right into both of them,” said Kevin F. R. Suitor, vice president of marketing at Exinda, in a statement. “Our virtual solution offering gives us more complete technology coverage on a variety of use cases in today’s market.”

The Virtual Exinda WAN Optimization Appliance is compatible with all major hypervisors in virtualized environments, company officials said. The solution is currently being beta tested by service providers and enterprise data centers to provide public and private cloud-based optimization services.

Recently, Exinda announced its 10060 series WAN optimization appliance has been deployed by Ryerson University of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, to easily monitor traffic, prioritize applications and optimize bandwidth usage on its campus network.

Kareo raises $10 million and will expand offering

We hear a lot about integrating IT into a medical practice’s workflow with the hope that it will make doctors’ lives easier. One way to do that is to provide a service that will help doctors get paid.

Kareo, an online medical billing software company with this goal, closed a $10 million equity investment this month led by Greenspring Associates with participation from OpenView Venture Partners, Western Technology Investment and angel investor Travis Kalanick. Greenspring is a global venture investment firm that manages over $2 billion in committed capital.

Kareo provides a cloud-based service that allows practices to schedule appointments, verify insurance eligibility, send electronic claims and receive insurance payments, bill patients, manage accounts receivables and integrate with certain electronic health records. Kareo aims to make it easier to track and receive reimbursements while cutting administrative costs. The software, which costs an average monthly subscription rate of $200 per doctor, is designed for small practices of one to four physicians.

The clientele focus comes from CEO Dan Rodrigues’ past experience at a software consulting company where he took on a project to build an Internet-based medical billing program. When he left his job to found Kareo in 2004, he set out to create finance managing software for small practices with TurboTax-like ease. “It’s really just maintaining that focus on the small practice, the user experience and solving the problem of making sure they get paid because it’s still a lot harder than it should be today,” Rodrigues said.

If you haven’t heard of Kareo until now, it’s because it has been flying under the radar, Rodrigues said. The company plans to use the newly acquired funding to increase sales and marketing programs. In addition Kareo will improve and enhance its service and support its partnerships with EHR companies Practice FusionQuest Diagnostics and WebPT.

Kareo has raised a total of approximately $20 million dollars to date. That includes a past investment of $9.5 million in 2010 from OpenView Venture Partners, a firm that has experience in helping expansion stage companies grow. Kareo has been profitable since 2008 and has increased revenue by more than 100% every year since. The company has 75 employees and expects to be at 100 employees by the end of year.

Later this month, Kareo will introduce its first product enhancement since the recent funding. This will include a new patient portal that lets practices send e-statements and collect credit card payments from their patients in the office and online. Additionally, Rodrigues said Kareo has a strong pipeline of new product offerings that he will announce in the coming months.

Central Desktop Upgrade Targets Project Managers

Continuing a string of upgrades that came as recent as this past June, Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) provider Central Desktop announced today its latest set of improvements, adding professional project management tools to its namesake technology.

Key to the upgrade enhancements include: task management, Gantt scheduling charts and resource tracking tools most commonly used by project management professionals. The big benefit for Central Desktop users is that it is “…organically combined into a comprehensive offering versus bolting on features or simply providing a narrow, one-off solution,” the company said today.

By “organic,” the company means combining its growing suite of tools into one tool chest of services to enhance productivity of disparate groups by leveraging the power of their cloud-based services.

For instance, back in June Central Desktop revealed upgrades consisting of a set of social collaboration tools that included presence detection and team polling features to help quantify opinions in discussion threads. Combining these tools with the latest set of upgrades allows project managers to gain perspective on a project or decision task from participants throughout the enterprise.

eEye Releases New Version of Retina CS With Vulnerability Management for Mobile Devices

eEye Digital Security, the company that provides Security in Context, today released a new version of Retina CS, which dramatically reduces security risks in physical and mobile environments.

With this release, Retina CS is the first vulnerability management solution to provide mobile device assessment as part of its unified vulnerability management solution, decreasing mobile security risks and protecting against data theft.

Because security around mobile devices is generally not integrated into overall security and vulnerability management practices, organizations are open to network security breaches, data loss, intellectual property theft, and regulatory compliance issues. Retina CS allows organizations to identify mobile vulnerabilities within the context of all vulnerabilities, to prioritize and fix the highest risk issues first — all from a single, web-based console. Benefits include:

  • Complete visibility and context on all vulnerabilities — including those from mobile devices — to find and fix weaknesses from a central management console
  • Decreased mobile security risks through agent-less technology that extends vulnerability management capabilities to BlackBerry devices through the BlackBerry Enterprise Server
  • Efficient and effective mobile security management with built-in and custom scanning for weaknesses in mobile device hardware, applications, and configurations

In addition to vulnerability management for mobile devices, Retina CS 2.6 also brings several new features and enhancements that improve security risk remediation, reporting, and insight including:

  • Patching for Microsoft and Third-Party Applications: Simplify remediation with integrated patching for both Windows and third-party applications.
  • New Heat Maps with Exploit Data: Improve risk prioritization with exploit mappings from Core Impact, Metasploit, and Exploit DB provided in an easy-to-read Heat Map with one-click drilldown to details.
  • New Assets View: Improve efficiencies with access to detailed information across vulnerabilities, ports, services, users, malware and attacks in a single click.
  • Nested Smart Groups: Improve asset organization and optimize scanning with nested smart groups.
  • Scanner Pooling & Locking: Optimize performance and control by assigning scan jobs to pools of scanners and locking certain scanners to specific Smart Groups.

“This release of Retina CS brings many unique capabilities particularly around mobile security. As the consumerization of IT continues, mobile security is an increasingly serious IT security problem,” said Brad Hibbert, vice president of strategy at eEye Digital Security. “The visibility that Retina CS provides eliminates the ‘blind spots’ mobile devices can create to reduce security risks in both physical and mobile environments.”

Retina CS 2.6 with vulnerability management for mobile devices is available now. It is also included for free with Retina CS Community for up to 128 IPs, available for download now: http://www.eeye.com/CSCommunity.
