An Overreliance on Experts is Unhealthy
March 8, 2011
Some companies think that an expert validates or invalidates any topic.
But bestowing experts with such power is both unhealthy and unwise. How many times have you received advice from an expert that could’ve been more pragmatic? And how many times have you received advice from an average person that turned out to be validated by an expert? Had you considered it in the first place, you could’ve saved a trip to an expert.
Obviously, it’s important to understand that strictly listening to common people is equally foolish. The principle here, however, is to consider others before automatically siding with experts. While their thought leadership is useful, it’s limiting in terms of developing your own business growth strategies.
When you listen to the common person, you’re also better suited to understand your customers, and having this connection is a boon for customer retention. For more information the world’s overreliance on experts, watch the video from Noreena Hertz.
