Boosting Productivity by Monitoring Self-Organization

August 1, 2010

As Dr. Jeff Sutherland explained, when Scrum was designed, it was built with simple rules that would allow a team using it to be hyperproductive. This, of course, functions on the premise that the team has correctly implemented the principles of Scrum. The “secret sauce,” as Scrum’s co-creator explained, is actually organization. In addition to performance, the other three main topics discussed in this video are:

  • Shock therapy as a strategy for invigorating teams.
  • The cosmic stopping problem and the choice uncertainty principle.
  • Punctuated equilibrium and how software systems evolve.

When a team is able to prioritize and organize, it performs at the highest levels possible because it eliminates productivity deterrents. This rate of production – or velocity – is something at the core of the business model for Toyota, which Dr. Sutherland frequently mentions in his lectures as a great example of certain principles.

And as eager ears sit and wait at this Google TechTalk, Dr. Sutherland is rewarding them with valuable knowledge on how to increase productivity.
