How AtTask is Reshaping the Industry, Part 2

August 18, 2010

In this video, the CEO of AtTask, Scott Johnson, covers a lot of ground pertaining to the internet’s ability to anticipate news. As examples, Johnson explained that Google is able to predict flu outbreaks at rapid speed, weeks before the federal Centers for Disease Control can. Today, information and news can come from citizen journalists who were previously muted. Using the many mediums at their disposal, they’re swarming social networks and online outlets such as blogs with breaking news.

A poignant example Johnson mentioned was that, during a major natural disaster in 2004, Twitter was being inundated with citizen journalist updates, while on CNN, Larry King was discussing motorcycles. These sorts of delays are partially responsible for sparking this revolution.

Every day, expectations for the news grow higher. Immediacy becomes as much of a factor in news as the writing, and being able to deliver the product in a speedy manner becomes almost as important as the product itself.
