Cloud and Mobile Computing

October 9, 2010

A recent survey by IBM indicated that cloud computing and mobile IT will be the most sought-after technologies within the next 5 years.

As a venture capital investor, OpenView Venture Partners is seeing the same thing. We speak to expansion stage software companies regularly, and on the IT and application side, we’re seeing more and more traction in both of these spaces.

The adoption of both of these technologies also creates opportunities for horizontal plays for software vendors in a number of areas, whether they’re startups, expansion stage companies, or just people with ideas today.

These areas are:

  • Access control and identity management
  • Provisioning of resources customized to users’ needs
  • Security of everything outside the company’s walls, which is what both cloud and mobile are all about
  • Seamless integration across multiple technology platforms, devices, networks, the Internet, and legacy applications

I’ll dive deeper into each of these points in the coming weeks.
