Cloud Computing Market Gets a Boost

November 2, 2010

The cloud market got another boost earlier this week with Dell’s acquisition of Boomi.

Some people are asking, “Who the heck is Boomi? And why is Dell buying such a relatively small company?” (relative to say, 3Par). In fact, integrating SaaS (including cloud-based SaaS) and onsite vendors and data points to one of the key technology trends in SaaS and, in turn, cloud adoption, since cloud-based services are SaaS. This is why IBM acquired Cast Iron earlier this year. Boomi has been in this space for a while and was, until today, one of the leading vendors.

Furthermore, a number of surveys over the past year indicated that in addition to security and governance issues, the act of integrating 3rd party hosted software vendors with each other and with onsite software is an impediment to cloud-based service adoption.

This acquisition by Dell is key to their competitive positioning as a cloud vendor, especially as they focus on scaling a business beyond hardware and firmly as a solution provider in the cloud computing market.
