Does a “Check-the-Box” Approach Lead to Mediocre Product Design?

December 6, 2011

An overly analytical, measured approach to product design will, more often than not, lead to disappointing results, says Chris Chan,  co-founder and VP of product at Causes.com.

While Chan doesn’t offer specific alternatives in this short video, he makes it clear that a check-the-box process will never create a standout product. Chan himself admits to buying into this mindset previously, before realizing that a more organic approach tended to ultimately generate better results.

Following this realization, Chan began to see the shortcomings of being too analytical when it comes to product design. Controlling each and every aspect with unwavering precision — contrary to prevailing logic — isn’t the best way to make a product.
