Earthquakes

January 14, 2010

My heart goes out to the people of Haiti, what a tragic 24 hours for them. Just because I was curious in relearning how earthquakes happen I thought I would get some of the specifics out.

“An earthquake is what happens when two blocks of the earth suddenly slip past one another. The surface where they slip is called the fault or fault plane. The location below the earth’s surface where the earthquake starts is called the hypocenter, and the location directly above it on the surface of the earth is called the epicenter.” http://earthquake.usgs.gov/learn/kids/eqscience.php

How can technology help when it comes to natural disasters? My time at OpenView hasn’t included much research into such a sector, if it even exists outside the public sector. I would hope that there are some expansion stage companies out there that I might be able to speak to, especially in light of yesterday’s tragedy.
