Good to great diagnostic

March 22, 2010

While researching for an earlier blog on the topic of building something great, a key OpenView Venture Partners value, I came across this Good to Great diagnostic on Jim Collins’ website. It is designed to help you and your team assess where you are on the path from being good to being great.

Every member of every senior management team of every expansion stage software company (and really, any stage), should at least read this diagnostic, if not go through it with their organization.

The diagnostic is based on his book, Good to Great, so anyone who has read that book will be familiar with all these principles, including:

  • A relentless focus on having the right people in the right jobs
  • Confronting the facts heads on (aka fact-based decision making)
  • And keeping your strategy simple with intense focus (part of the Hedgehog Concept, at a high level)

These principles apply to the organization as a whole, and to its individual functions, whether it is finance, sales, marketing, product management and development, or customer support and consulting.

On the path from being just good to being great, where are you?
