Haiti and Social Networks

January 21, 2010

With the disaster in Haiti still fresh in our minds, hearts and television sets I’ve been wondering the best ways to help and where all that donated money actually goes.

When the Earthquake happened it seemed moments later the web was abuzz with social chatter, from Facebook to Twitter, there were plenty of folks online feeding the rest of the world with instant and updated reports. Fast forward a week later and there continues to be a positive of social networking in all of this…disaster relief fundraising. But beware, a ton of these social networking sites like Facebook seem to be tricking users into joining groups to help benefit Haiti, when in reality joining the group does nothing at best and at worst opens up your profile to a potential scammer. It will be interesting to see how technology and law play out over time here.

With so many people in need of donations it’s heartbreaking to think there are those out there that are using this tragedy to pad their wallets.
