Are You Filtering Out the Wrong Job Candidates?

June 21, 2011

Applicant filters usually start out as harmless requirements for a particular job.

However, when they’re not carefully chosen, they can quickly constrain the number of qualified applicants you will receive — while potentially not improving the quality of the average candidate. So which application filters can cause this unwelcome outcome?

Most of the time they’re industry-related requirements, says Richard Hadden, author of Contented Cows Give Better Milk. When you require your applicant pool to have experience in a specific industry — unless it’s absolutely vital to the position — you’re eliminating many otherwise qualified candidates that don’t have that type of experience.

To remedy the situation, Hadden says that recruiters needs to go back to the management teams and find out if such a demand is really necessary. For more recruiting tips to increase your qualified applicant pool, watch the video featuring Hadden and Todd Edward Raphael.
