Listen to Philippe Starck Talk About ‘Why Design?’
September 14, 2011
Designer Philippe Starck takes the stage and makes no excuses in this video. He doesn’t bring any slides with him and his accent is pronounced, two things he admits immediately. But that didn’t stop him from maximizing his 18-minute lecture on the topic of design. A renowned mind in the world of design, Starck’s knowledge is sought after all over the world. The question he aims to answer in his speech is “Why Design?” Meaning, what is it that motivates design?
Intelligent design is at the forefront of Starck’s lecture. He explains that the theory behind his work – and what truly motivates him – is the desire to invent and create anew. Using a number of subjects that indirectly correlate with design inspiration, Starck explains that designing is very human in itself. It’s reflective of what people are and what they are becoming.
In the future, Starck says, a “white piece of paper” will be available to those who are interested in taking the next step in design, and thus answering the question of “why design?”
