Newspapers Making The Headlines

October 7, 2009

While doing some online surfing recently, I stumbled upon an article regarding the rapid decline of newspapers. It was alarming. While getting ready for school as a child, my father would always be reading the morning newspaper sipping on a cup of coffee. I don’t think a day went by that I didn’t see that every morning of my youth. When I walk into a place like Starbucks and all I see are people glued to their laptops, it’s starting to make sense. Most places where one would sit, relax, and read the paper, have been overtaken by Wi-Fi enabled devices. Laptops and cell phones are most people’s morning paper. Are newspapers really on the brink of extinction?  I knew that a lot of newspapers were struggling to get by in recent years, but I didn’t know that it was this crazy. In the past 10 years I’m seeing more and more growth in the publishing software sector. Companies are popping up all over the world to pick up where the newspaper industry is leaving off. It’s a bit sad to think that there will be no more newspapers, but it’s just another indication of how strong of an impact the internet has had in our day to day lives.
The article is referenced below. I found it to be very insightful.  It’s a little ironic that I was reading it online as well.
