Tending to Company-Specific Regulatory Issues

January 17, 2011

Software companies, for the most part, aren’t a high-risk group for regulatory issues.

There are the general legal rules that govern any business, sure. But as far as the industry as a whole is concerned, there isn’t much that should be cause for concern. Technology and law are usually mutually exclusive, except where they intersect in terms of intellectual property. Still, you should be intimately familiar with your domain and its laws.

You should also keep an eye on your customer’s regulatory issues as part of a best practices process. Software licensing is an issue that often crops up in some companies and an audit can quickly expose flaws if licensing hasn’t been properly managed.

Again, software companies sort of fall outside of any heavily regulated realm. This isn’t an excuse to be oblivious to the regulations and laws that apply to your business. Watch this video from OpenView Labs featuring Jeremy Aber for more information on this legal issue.
