The Online Secret Santa Option

December 9, 2009

With Christmas right around the corner, many families are preparing for their Secret Santa gift exchanges. I was waiting to get an email from one of my family members to find out who I should be buying gifts for, but was pleasantly surprised to get an email with a link to a website instead. Normally, this event is stressful and annoying to me. I do love this time of year, but have been underwhelmed by the Secret Santa idea. This year is different. I would like to introduce you to a very cool idea that I’ve discovered this Christmas season, www.elfster.com.

Elfster is a free online service and community that simplifies the gift exchange process by directing folks to a website which is filled with wish list updates, email notifications, and message boards. This suite of online tools also allows you to add direct links to your favorite restaurant or online clothing store. I think it’s great to get an email that notifies me that my grandmother just updated her wish list online. It’s good to see her generation getting some hands-on experience with the internet. She comes from a generation that is stubborn and sometimes intimidated by our new online lifestyle. One thing that I’m aware of is that my grandmother, and many people in her age bracket, may not be too computer savvy. This complication would eventually bring the vibe of this more unified and efficient gift exchange idea, back into stress mode. I do hope that Elfster’s technical IT support team is armed and ready for the large amount of support emails they must receive in such a small time-frame.
