Trust & Communication Within Teams

November 12, 2009

Hi there. Are you a member of a great team? Do you wish your team was more compatible? Do you constantly strive to hit your quarterly goals, but never feel like you have time to give your two cents on why it’s so challenging to hit them? Many management teams fail to recognize the importance of trust and communication within teams.

I recently read a book called The Five Dysfunctions of a Team, by Patrick Lecioni. Patrick is founder and president of The Table Group, a management and consulting firm that works with executive teams all over the world. This book is full of goodness, and is really a revolutionary guide on how to align your team to success. One excerpt from this book that I’d like to draw attention to, deals with trust and communication. “In the context of building a team, trust is the confidence among team members that their peers’ intentions are good, and that there is no reason to be protective or careful around the group”, Patrick says.” He further states, “In essence, teammates must get comfortable being vulnerable with one another.” I agree completely with this statement. If you can’t feel comfortable within your team, or communicate open and honestly, then it will be much harder to overcome your obstacles and attain your goals. There is always room for improvement, and if we keep searching for ways to develop as individuals, it will only benefit the tasks that we are involved with in business. I’d highly recommend reading this book.
