Who is getting investments

December 17, 2009

A lot of start-up companies seem to think that Californian growth venture capital firms and Boston venture capital firms invest in relatively different areas. California is perceived to be “cooler” and invest in earlier, funkier companies where Boston firms focus on more “boring” things like utilities and health care. The below graphs show that the allocation of funds by sector is pretty dead even. I am not sure how this has changed and if CA is being more conservative, MA is being more open, or, like everything else, we all have to follow the market more closely.

So, all of you little companies that think Boston is not very exciting, look again!
