Wonder What to Do? Ask Siri!
February 9, 2010
I just asked my phone if it will snow today, and after it told me to wait for a moment to “check the current conditions” it answered to me that it didn’t look like precipitation was likely for Monday. Also, to make sure that my question was answered thoroughly enough, it fetched today’s weather forecast provided by the “WeatherBug.” Needless to say, I am using an iPhone, however the magic behind this instant, seamless collaboration between man and machine was created by SIRI – the new application developed by the California based software start-up company Siri, Inc.
The management teams of Siri presented its cool creation as a “do engine rather than a search engine” that allows users to make reservations for restaurants, call taxis, buy movie tickets, and get answers to a whole lot of questions regarding locations or events around them by just speaking their requests to their Smartphone. The company’s application is serviced by partnerships with OpenTable, MovieTickets, StubHub, CitySearch, TaxiMagic, etc. allowing the user quick and “intelligent” access to rich and thorough location-based database of places-to-go, things-to-see, means-to-do-it.
Not surprisingly, the launching of this innovative product was preceded by a recently closed $15.5 million Series B round of venture capital financing. Only three months after its November venture investment, the company was featured in articles in NYTimes and TechCrunch. The hype around the company earns Siri a “venture capital investment success story” spot on my blog.
