Examining the Seedy Underbelly of Social Media
January 26, 2012
The inherent risks of social media and social networking aren’t always acknowledged.
There are people, however, that don’t have the best intentions for their uses of social media. A semi-recent example is an incident involving Sony, where its online gaming network was repeatedly compromised. The public relations fiasco that ensued didn’t alleviate any of the mounting pressure being placed upon the company, either. What is the lesson of this story? There is indeed a dark side to social media and networking. Robert Tercek of This Week In discusses the topic with a panel of guests in this short video.
Whatever your stance on the seedy underbelly of social media is — whether oblivious, aware or ambivalent — it’s important to recognize the potential for harm social media has. No company is immune to cyber crimes. And no company is immune to fallout stemming from social media blunders. The sooner your company recognizes this and prepares for a worst case scenario, the easier you can breath.
