Experience or Intuition: Which is More Important?

March 19, 2011

Unfortunately, if you had one choice, you would be wise to choose intuition over experience.

Experience can be taught through employee development, over time. Judgment is a knack; it’s natural to most people. And those that don’t have it, usually never figure it out. It’s not something that can be taught, per se, unlike experience.

Mike Rowe, of Dirty Jobs fame, reported similar findings in this video. There have been countless people in society that had all of the experience an employer could want. And in the end, many of them turned out to have poor judgment. They turned into criminals, frauds and bad employees, in short. When these people were hired, had more emphasis been placed on judgment, this may have been avoided.

At the expansion stage, you want to be able to trust your employees to not stray from the company strategy. For more on this subject, watch the video featuring Mike Rowe.
