1992: Derartu Tulu and Elana Meyer share victory lap

The Olympic Games are intended to be a platform for sporting competition, but on occasion, they become much more symbolic. The story of runners Derartu Tulu and Elana Meyer is one such extraordinary example. Tulu, a black Ethiopian, and Meyer, a white South African, held hands and shared Tulu’s victory lap following the Ethiopian’s 10,000-meter race win.

Entrepreneur Lesson: Whether you win or lose, don’t forget the big picture. Many times, your competitors are also your colleagues, and they play a big role in setting the stage and pushing you towards success. Showing them respect and humility – no matter what the conditions are – can improve your relationships significantly.
