Reliance on technology
November 26, 2009
During the past few weeks I have been moving my base of operations, and during this move I came to realize how reliant I am on technology.
Living in the Boston area, I enjoyed connectivity everywhere I went, but moving to rural Florida I came to realize how much I took for granted. My cell phone that “just worked” everywhere in Boston, was always searching for a signal in Florida. The same held true for my wireless card that I relied on for Internet access. I was stranded.
This made me think about the need to know what services are available in any given area if you are providing operational support. To setup a call center, or to allow users to work remotely requires that the necessary infrastructure services are available for this to work properly.
In the end, I had to switch cell phone providers, as well as the provider of my wireless card for Internet access. This was a long and painful process, that had I researched a little more, could have been avoided.
