What will be my next gadget?

January 13, 2010

I am a gadget junky and anybody that knows me can attest to that. I am always looking for the next shiny thing to buy. Honestly, it’s a curse. However, that portion of my personality is one of the reasons why I love working in expansion stage venture capital.

So, with CES over and Apple about to announce their new set of products in two weeks, what are some of the new gadgets I am thinking about bringing home? Below are the top 3:

1. Apple Tablet: Though details about the device are only rumors at this stage, this is one shiny object I may bring home. The ultra-portability and multi-touch interface could lend itself well in meetings and during travel. I see it potentially replacing my notebook and also serving as a high powered e-reader (yet to purchase one yet). Still, based on the price and the fact I already have a macbook air, I probably will wait until I see how other consumers use the device. For most gadget junkies like me, this will probably be a must have 2010 purchase.

2. Parrot AR.Drone: This is just me being a big kid. However, being able to pilot a mini quadricopter that is remote controlled by my iPhone is just too cool!

3. Plastic Logic Que ProReader: If I don’t end up shelling out money for the Apple Tablet, I may pick up this puppy. Essentially an ereader with advanced capabilities with its competitive positioning geared towards business users. Sleek, to the point, and accesses critical content (newspapers, magazines, books). For $649, is a bit of a hefty price tag…but it looks very cool…

I am NOT so excited about the next wave of televisions we are seeing. Skeptical 3d television will make a big splash (especially since you still need to wear some funky glasses). Also, I am all for ultra slim televisions. However, not about to toss out my 46 inch LCD to gain a couple inches of “critical” space on my wall.

Those are my picks. Looking forward to add to my gadget collection this year!
